Build a digital picture frame. Turn an old laptop into a nice frame for showing digital pictures. If it has a cd rom, have it read pictures from there, if not have it read them from a central server. Option one: pictures are prescaled to correct resolution (ie. 800x600), option two: the frame uses ImageMagick or somesuch to rescale pictures before displaying them. Graphics environments: SVGALib, Xfree86, PicoGUI, Microwindows and NanoGUI, or twin (probably to specialized to work good enough).

Ok, I have been given an old laptop which fits nicely for this projects. It has an 800x600 LCD panel, a cd-rom drive and harddrive. It also has pccard slots for a network card.
I have made the laptop run SVGAlib and XFree86. I think XFree86 will be the best option on this machine, as the only program that runs with SVGAlib right now is seejpeg, and it resets the screen between each picture. I need to create (or find) a nice script for the slideshow. I also need to create a CD with pictures for the test case.

Interesting. zgv is now in the ports collection. In theory, this should be better than seejpeg for image slideshows. I must test zgv. When the summer is over perhaps?
