Hardware:
  • CPU: intel Celeron @ 400 Mhz
  • Memory: 256 MB PC100 (1 DIMM, 1 ledig plass)
    • var: 128 MB RAM (2 DIMMer, ingen ledige plasser)
  • disk: nok
  • lydkort: Creative Soundblaster Vibra16C (isa) PnP
  • skjermkort: nVidia GeForce2 MX / MX400 (NV11)
  • TV kort: Hauppauge PVR-500MCE (hardware MPEG encoder)
    • var: Hauppauge WinTV PCI-FM (model 747)
Aktiviteter:
  • install KnoppMyth - ok
  • WinTV PCI-FM: configure TV card - still problems with the cx88 driver and my TV card (Hauppauge WinTV PCI-FM model 747).
  • PVR-500: card needs a newer version of ivtv (the driver). Downloaded, configured and installed. Works
  • set up sound card - ok
  • enable ntp - ok
  • configure MythTV
    • the PVR-500 needs to be set up as a MPEG-2 card (aka PVR-250 / PVR-350 in MythTV)
    • XvMC hardware decoding had to be turned off to enable playback
  • secure Mythweb - ok
Tester:
    • PVR-500:
  • test av opptak (recording)
    • WinTV PCI-FM: test av opptak - testet - virker
    • PVR-500: test av opptak - testet - virker.
Mer testing gjenstår.

FreeBSD on Sun Ultra 1 Creator 3D

  View Printable Version
ProjectsI have aquired a couple of Sun Ultra 1 Creator 3D machines, with keyboard and mouse. I will try to make at least one of them work, and install FreeBSD/sparc64 on it. Things i need:
  • a monitor adapter, from the Sun-monitor-type plug to "normal type" VGA (15 pin) connector
    • 13W3 to VGA adapter aquired; bought from a net shop.
  • disks with SCA 80-pins connector. Luckily, I already have a spud bracket.
    • Drive aquired. I found a 36GB SCA drive fairly cheap.

FreeBSD and DVD ripping

  View Printable Version
ProjectsFirst you have Aeonflux's Guide to DVD ripping under FreeBSD. Next there is dvdrip from the ports collection. My favorite is ripmake, which is "a fully automatic command line ripping makefile generator for transcode". Examples for ripmake:
ripmake -C 800 file.avi vcd convert file.avi into files ready for burning to cd's. Assume a cd size of 800MB.
Other options for ripmake are:
-n pal convert output to PAL format
-f af6 force input video codec to be af6 (avifile). Other codecs are ffmpeg, mov (quicktime), divx, xvid and mplayer. Useful if for some reason ripmake fails to detect the proper input codecs.

Digital Picture frame

  View Printable Version
ProjectsBuild a digital picture frame. Turn an old laptop into a nice frame for showing digital pictures. If it has a cd rom, have it read pictures from there, if not have it read them from a central server. Option one: pictures are prescaled to correct resolution (ie. 800x600), option two: the frame uses ImageMagick or somesuch to rescale pictures before displaying them. Graphics environments: SVGALib, Xfree86, PicoGUI, Microwindows and NanoGUI, or twin (probably to specialized to work good enough).

Home Automation

ProjectsNow that X-10 equipment is available here (see Framtidshuset, SmartHus and others) it would be nice to build some automation into the house. AutomatedHome (UK) has a few good articles. Also take a look at The xPL Project, and xPLHal. There is also Project LinuxGURU

HTPC with FreeBSD

  View Printable Version
ProjectsThis project will show my efforts to build a Home Theater PC (or HTPC for short) with FreeBSD. The goal is to have the necessary hardware and software into this machine so that I can
  • watch and record TV
  • listen to radio channels
  • play DVDs
  • play digital video (many formats)
  • play digital music (mp3, ogg, etc.)
  • control it with a remote control
It will be network connected. Nice extras will be the ability to show pictures from the hard drive or a card reader.
